The classrooms and hallways of St. Joseph School’s Pre-K recently transformed into a world-class gallery as families gathered to celebrate a truly spectacular culminating art show. After exploring the lives and works of some of history’s greatest artists, our youngest learners proudly displayed their own masterpieces and the results were breathtaking.
Students studied each artist with care and rose to every creative challenge. Inspired by Vincent van Gogh, they painted swirling Starry Night scenes complete with dramatic black silhouettes, as well as cheerful sunflower studies. Channeling Claude Monet, they created stunning water lily paintings layered with texture and blooming tissue paper flowers. In the spirit of Georges Seurat, little fingers dabbed and dotted their way through colorful pointillist trees. Piet Mondrian’s bold primary color grid came to life as each child filled their canvas with confident strokes of red, blue, and yellow. Andy Warhol’s iconic pop art style inspired a show-stopping display of the children’s own portraits, repeated in vibrant, wild colors just like the master himself.
One of the most memorable days of the months-long unit was dedicated to Jackson Pollock, when the children got to do what every four-year-old dreams of: make a glorious mess in the name of art. They splattered, dripped, and flung paint, producing large, energy-filled canvases that captured the spirit of Pollock’s work perfectly. In a nod to Yayoi Kusama, they decorated pumpkin shapes with her signature polka dot patterns in every color imaginable. And in what may have been the most talked-about experience of all, the children lay flat on their backs to paint their Michelangelo pieces, just as he did while creating the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
Each child was featured in a “Meet the Artist” display, sharing their favorite artist, their favorite color, and what art means to them. One student, Maisie, put it simply and perfectly: “Art makes me feel good inside my heart.”
