Requirements of a Sponsor

Sponsor Requirements

  • A sponsor must be a practicing Catholic who is at least 16 years of age or older.
  • He/she must be fully initiated into the Catholic Church having received the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.
  • A sponsor should be someone admired by the student, someone who can share his/her faith with the student and will guide the student on his/her faith journey.

According to Cannon Law, a parent CANNOT be a Sponsor or stand in as a proxy. One of the baptismal godparents would be a suitable Sponsor for Confirmation, but another who fits the description may be selected.
