Romero
On March 24, 1980, at the outset of El Salvador’s 12 year-long civil war, Archbishop Oscar Romero was killed by a sniper while saying Mass in a cancer hospital’s chapel, a day after pleading with and ordering soldiers to stop killing innocent civilians. As depicted in this 1989 film starring Raul Julia, Romero was martyred because he believed and lived the beautiful but hard truth that “our Christian faith does not separate us from the world; rather, it immerses us in the world.” On March 23, 2015, almost 35 years to the day after he was murdered, Oscar Romero was beatified in an emotional ceremony in San Salvador.
