Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Back in the early 1900s, Garden City residents were required to travel to Hempstead to attend Mass at Our Lady of Loretto. It was the time before cars and, therefore, not an easy trip. On October 6, 1901, the first Mass ever to be offered in Garden City was celebrated in the Casino. As the number of Catholics continued to grow, the Mass was moved to a hall in the Garden City Hotel. The original St. Joseph’s Church building was dedicated in May 1905.

St. Joseph’s continues to hold the annual parish party at the Garden City Hotel as the hotel has been part of our history. For example, in 1954, the party was an exciting event where most parishioners participated. The party lasted all night and people stayed overnight at the hotel. There were many committees for various purposes: arrangements, program, game room, fifty-fifty, chair of cheer, chance, floor, finance and several others. The parish party was a fund raising event but also brought the parishioners together into a spirit of sharing faith and fellowship.

Today, we continue to hold the parish party at the Garden City Hotel. Why continue to host the gala event at the Garden City Hotel? Because the hotel provides a convenient location where we can gather together for a fun, relaxing and enjoyable time. By holding the event at the Garden City Hotel we help support the local economy. The hotel recently completed a major renovation and is planning to open a 7,000 square foot spa this winter. The original Garden City Hotel opened in 1874 and for generations was the largest and most exclusive hotel on Long Island. It was built to be the focal point of our community and has been the preferred destination for many prominent Americans. For example, Charles Lindbergh chose to stay at the hotel on the eve of his historic trans-Atlantic flight. Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray said recently, “The Garden City Hotel sits at the heart of our county’s tourism and hospitality industry. It creates jobs not just within its walls but throughout Garden City and the Town of Hempstead. It has given employees an opportunity to solidify their careers and it has given Long Island families a place to celebrate, world travelers to experience a luxury experience and businessmen and women a chance to network and build relationships.” The Garden City Hotel is the sixth oldest hotel in New York State.

Please consider attending this year’s parish party. The 2014 Parish Party Committee promises a fun filled evening of community spirit with rekindled friendships and new ones made. If unable to attend, we urge you to support the event by participating in the raffle, or simply making a contribution to the Church of St. Joseph. The event will be held on Friday, November 21.
